Single drawer unit thingy?
A bit of an odd question...

We're planning on adding pet rats to our menagerie and the planned cage measures 30"Wx18"D. I would love a "stand" of sorts to go underneath it--not to add height so much as to add storage. So I'd love a single drawer unit of sorts that's no more than like 12" high, but 30" wide and 18" deep, minimum. Does anyone know of something that exists like that?

I would look at some TV stands. Off the top of my head, target might have modular pieces that might work for you, and Ikea might also have something.

Seconding Target. I got a small end table from Target that I use for a stand for my large exoterra. It was pretty inexpensive and sturdy enough to support the cage.

Yeah, thirding Target. My mudskipper tank used to be on a small two-drawer unit that was about 16 inches high. It wasn't 18" deep, but they have a bunch of different units and one of those might work.

This is what I did, though I got mine from Ikea. Then I put bins in it to act as drawers. Worked nicely. :)

I had my rat cage on top of an end table with a drawer in it that I got at a thrift store - but mine was tall rather than wide, so it fit on traditional end tables well. But I'd still take a look at thrift store furniture to see if anything fits your needs.

I wouldn't put a rat cage on the plastic drawer things they sell at Target, etc - I don't think it would be stable enough to hold it.

Target has some decent wooden furniture/drawer units as well that come in a variety of colors (white, browns, black).

I've been intrigued by these lately in designed a new layout for my toddler's room: http://viaboxes.com/

Those are pretty. I bought a couple of these for my son's room, but the wide open space can be awkward for storing oddly shaped toys. It would be easy to store a bunch of books, but things like blocks and musical instruments take up a bunch of unnecessary vertical space unless they are in their own bin within the shelving unit.

How about the drawers that are meant to go under a bed? Like this.

My daughter built a rat habitat out of a bookcase. It was seriously awesome and her rats LOVED it. I am pretty sure she found the instructions online. It wasn't even very difficult to do. The rats had plenty of space and also enrichment activities.

You might want to check out the ratties community here on LJ too. Not necessarily for this question, but just generally. http://ratties.livejournal.com/profile

try officefurniture.com. They have lots of small pieces, inexpensive, delivered, guaranteed. And you can talk to them and describe what you need if you don't see it on the site.
